What Is Ptosis?
Ptosis (pronounced “toe-sis”) is the term used to describe a drooping of the upper eyelid or droopy eyelids. This drooping or lowering can give you an obstructed field of vision and change your appearance. People suffering from this condition have trouble keeping their eyelids open and to compensate, will often arch their eyebrows in an effort raise their drooping eyelids. Overtime this can contribute to premature or increased forehead lines and wrinkles besides the “lazy eye” or sleepy look that ptosis causes.
Ptosis can be congenital, occurring in children. Children that have ptosis can develop a stigmatism due to the pressure exerted on the eye from the drooping eyelid and require treatment as soon as possible to prevent vision conditions worsening as the child develops.
What Causes Drooping Eyelids Or Ptosis?
The muscle that lifts the eyelid is called the levator muscle, when this becomes weak or is underdeveloped, ptosis can result. Eye ptosis usually occurs over time, as we age, but there are also other factors that can contribute to the condition such as:
- Contact lens wear
- Complications from corrective eye surgery or cataract surgery
- Head injury
- A tumor
- Neurological conditions such as Horner’s syndrome and nerve palsy
While ptosis itself is usually not painful, the condition can lead to aches and pains in other areas of the body. Ptosis, even if slight, causes your eyelid to droop and cover part of your eye thus obstructing your vision. People compensate for this obstruction by tilting their head up to see better, this can result in a sore neck which can mistakenly be attributed to a neck condition and is only handled when the ptosis is treated. Other symptoms to look out for that might indicate ptosis are:
- Blurred or double vision
- Tilting of the head in a chin up position
- Eye tiredness
- Frequent raising of the eyebrows in an effort to lift the eyelids
- Eyestrain and headache

Treating drooping eyelids or ptosis can be done in many ways, each one tailored to your specific condition; tightening of your levator muscle may be the correct option for you. If your levator muscle is extremely weak, a “sling” operation can be performed which involves using the forehead muscles to raise the eyelids. Another involves surgery on the muscle inside the lid of the eye. These are all out-patient procedures and usually use only local anesthesia with a minimal recovery time.
