How Does Fat Transfer Compare To Liposuction?

Traditional liposuction techniques are great in terms of generally available options for changing the shapes and contours of our bodies. The tumescent method uses the injection of an anesthetizing liquid to break up fatty tissue and a cannula, or hollow tube, to remove it. Ultrasound liposuction uses energetic sound beams to melt and break up the fat cells which are then either removed traditionally with a cannula, or allowed to dissipate through the body to be eliminated naturally.

Liposuction, whether performed with a cutting-edge or more traditional method, is only really good for fat removal, however. In addition to a number of lipo-based options for fat removal, Dr. Perry Liu also offers a service called fat transfer which allows him to, metaphorically speaking, “take from the rich and give to the poor”.

For people who find they have one or two stubborn areas that, no matter what they do, refuse to respond to a healthy diet and exercise, the standard tumescent or ultrasound techniques are perfectly adequate. Some people, however, have additional goals that cannot be so easily met. Fat transfer is one way of helping patients to meet multiple goals at the same time or, again metaphorically, “kill two birds with one stone”.

Many people, as they age, find that stubborn fat deposits accumulate in unwanted areas, while facial skin becomes looser and prone to wrinkling. Likewise, many women find that their thighs, buttocks, or belly insist on getting bigger, while their breasts insist on staying the same. In these situations, fat transfer can seem like a miracle cure.

In the fat transfer procedure, fat is carefully harvested from a site on the patient’s body where it is overabundant, and then it’s put back into the patient’s body through a series of micro-injections designed specifically to allow the body to keep those cells alive. The fat cells are, of course, injected into a place where it will do some good.

In the case of the woman who is unsatisfied with the size of her breasts, injecting her own autologous fatty tissue into her breasts can increase her breast size by up to one or 2 cup sizes. For those with aging, wrinkling skin, injections of fat can firm up and fill out those facial features, resulting in appearance that looks years younger and that can last a considerable length of time.

For many body contouring scenarios, tumescent or modern ultrasound liposuction can be perfectly adequate. Some situations, however, can benefit greatly from the ability to move fatty tissue from one part of the body to another. If you feel you might benefit from a little less here, and a little more there, call Dr. Liu to book a consultation.
