How to Choose the Right Surgeon for Your Labiaplasty

If you’ve been suffering from the pain and discomfort of excessively protruding labia minora, or have felt the debilitating social effects that can arise from having such a private part of your anatomy fall so far outside of the norms for appearance, you may be considering undergoing a labiaplasty. This is a procedure where a plastic surgeon is able to remove excess tissue from overly large labia, producing a more aesthetically pleasing vaginal contour, as well as a more comfortable physiological outline.

It is important, however, when considering such a drastic procedure to be performed on such a sensitive part of your body, to choose the right surgeon. Given the proliferation of rejuvenation clinics and plastic surgery practices that popped up over the last few years, this can be a harder choice than you may at first think. Knowing what to look for in a plastic surgeon can help make the choice much, much easier.

The first thing to consider is whether or not a plastic surgeon is certified by the ASPS, or American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Any medical doctor can legally perform cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. A plastic surgeon is allowed to perform a labiaplasty, but that doesn’t mean he/she should do so. An ASPS certification is an indication that a surgeon specializes in these techniques, and is therefore both qualified and competent to perform them.

Provided a surgeon is certified, you should consider whether he performs both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, or cosmetic procedures only. A surgeon who performs both types of procedure is a much better choice than one who does not. Dr. Liu, for example, has spent much of his education and career researching and developing reconstructive and microsurgical techniques. A focus on reconstructive surgeries is a strong indication that a surgeon will consider your overall health and well-being in addition to the aesthetic aspects involved.

That’s not to say that aesthetics are unimportant, though. Whether you’re having a labiaplasty performed for purely physical, purely aesthetic, or a combination of both reasons, the appearance of the final result is important. We are at our most vulnerable when we are naked, and being self-conscious about the appearance of our genitals can have devastating effects on our self image, and self-confidence. By selecting the surgeon with a strong artistic background, like Dr. Liu, you can be confident that the end result will be in balance, and pleasing to the eye.

Once you’ve narrowed your choice of surgeon down to one or two, you’ll want to book a consultation to discuss your options, and to determine which surgeon is the best choice for you. If your consultation doesn’t make you feel comfortable, you should keep looking.
